Do I have to have a college degree in order to be eligible for membership?

No degree is necessary, nor is an affiliation with an educational or research institution……that’s the “independent” part. All that’s necessary is an interest in intellectual subject matter, in scholarship, and in meeting others so inclined. Some of our members are current or retired scholars; many others are not.

All of our lectures are free. We encourage and welcome guests.

I am interested in the idea of your organization’s study groups, but you don’t have one that addresses any of my interests—art, music, history. Could one be started? How??

Any member can start a study group
, with board approval, and hope to find other members also interested.

Why do you offer half price UCSD library cards?2019-03-11T18:02:20+00:00

As a long time affiliate of UCSD, our senior members are invited to apply for library cards. SDIS pays for half the cost of these cards as a perk to members.

Look for the lecture information on our homepage. You’ll see a tab that says MAP on the middle of that section. You’ll find information about parking and walking to the meeting room.

What is your relationship to National Coalition of Independent Scholars (NCIS)?2019-03-06T20:30:17+00:00

SDIS is a partner member of NCIS. We were founded first and inspired the founding of NCIS.
